BOISE, Idaho - Boise State redshirt senior punter Sean Wale has been named a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy, the National Football Foundation announced Wednesday.

Wale is one of six semifinalists from the Mountain West and one of 156 from all divisions of college football (FBS, FCS, Division II, Division III, NAIA). The NFF will announce 12-14 finalists on Nov. 1, with each of those finalists receiving an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship as a member of the NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class.

The William V. Campbell Trophy will be awarded to one of those finalists at the 59th NFF Annual Awards Dinner in New York, and that recipient will have his postgraduate scholarship increased to $25,000.

Candidates for the award must be a senior or graduate student in their final year of eligibility, have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.2 (on a 4.0 scale), be a first-team or significant contributor for their team and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship.

Wale, in his final season at Boise State, is enjoying one of his best campaigns through the first month, averaging 44.0 yards per punt, tied for 25th in the country. Four of his punts have landed inside opponents' 20-yard lines, with three going at least fifty yards and six of his 13 kicks resulting in fair catches. His performance at Oregon State (Sept. 24), in which he averaged 46.5 yards over six punts and dropped three inside the Beaver 20, earned Wale the Mountain West Special Teams Player of the Week award, the first by a Boise State punter since joining the conference in 2011.

Off the field, Wale owns a 3.84 GPA while working towards his major in health sciences. As part of his studies, Wale works in a research lab on campus where he studies nanotechnology and does research on early cancer detection. Last year, he was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District VII Team, and is a three-time Academic All-Mountain West selection as well as a three-time recipient of the Mountain West Scholar-Athlete Award.

Boise State - 3-0 for the first time since 2011 - opens Mountain West play Saturday against Utah State at Albertsons Stadium. Kickoff is set for 8:15 p.m. and the game will be televised on ESPN2.
