BOISE, Idaho - After a convincing 45-0 victory over Sacramento State in the season opener last Thursday, the Boise State football team faces the challenge of a visiting Oregon State football team this week. Game time for the Bronco-Beaver match-up is set for 5:47 p.m. and will be shown nationally on ESPN. Oregon State enters the game at 1-0 on the season as well, downing Eastern Washington 56-17 last Thursday in a game very similar to the Boise State-Sacramento State meeting.
While the game is center stage for the nation to see, so to will the anniversary of the world famous blue turf at Bronco Stadium. Fans are asked to help create a “Blue Out” in Bronco Stadium by taking a one game break from wearing orange, in honor of the 20th anniversary of The Blue. At stadium gates, 20,000 Blue 20 rally towels will be distributed, while members of the 1986 Bronco team, the first to play on The Blue, will be introduced pre-game. Commemorative Blue 20 t-shirts will also be available for sale at the stadium through the BSU Bookstore.
This week’s Oregon State game is celebrated as the anniversary game, as it is the closest date this season to the first game ever played on The Blue, back on September 13, 1986. In that game, Boise State manhandled Humboldt State, 74-0, in what is still the widest margin of victory all-time by a Bronco team.
The 1986 brainchild of Boise State Athletic Director Gene Bleymaier, the blue turf at Bronco Stadium has gone through three different types of playing fields over the past 20 years. The first Astro Turf field was installed prior to the 1986 season and christened with a 74-0 victory over Humboldt State in the home opener. The second, and slightly darker blue Astro Turf field, was put in place in 1995, followed up with the current Astro Play blue surface, which was installed during the summer of 2002.
Currently, Boise State lays claim to the only blue (and for that matter non-green) playing surface in the country, and is at the height of popularity in recent years with nine nationally televised games from Bronco Stadium since 1999. Last year, “The Blue” also made ESPN.com’s top 12 list of most recognizable sports sites in the world. Boise State owns an all-time record of 109-30 for a 78.4 winning percentage on “The Blue”, including a 46-2 record the past seven years.
Throughout the 2006 season, Boise State Athletics will recognize and celebrate the 20th anniversary, dubbed Blue 20. This will include on field recognition, stadium signage and banners, great “Blue” moments on the Bronco Vision video board, on-line polls and interactive features, commemorative t-shirts and fans can even look for the Blue 20 patch that will be placed on the sleeve of Bronco home jerseys.
