BOISE, Idaho For the first time in Boise State’s history, a freshman will start at quarterback in the season opener for the Broncos. Boise State head coach Chris Petersen announced today that Kellen Moore will start at quarterback when the Broncos face Idaho State on Aug. 30 at Bronco Stadium.
“Kellen has just got great football savvy” Petersen said. “He understands our offense extremely, extremely well and he has performed very consistently throughout spring ball and fall camp.”
Moore was named the Gatorade Player of the Year in the state of Washington and was the Washington Player of the Year as a senior in 2006 while playing at Prosser High School. He set Washington state high school career records for completions (787) and touchdown passes (173), while setting single season records for completions (317 as a junior), yards (4,600 as a junior) and touchdown passes (67 as a senior). Moore finished his high school career completing 787-of-1,195 passes (65.9 percent) for 11,367 yards and 173 touchdowns.
As a senior he led Prosser to a 12-1 record and a spot in the state semifinals by completing 287-of-399 passes (71.9 percent) for 4,269 yards and 67 touchdowns with just seven interceptions. He passed for 400-plus yards in a game twice as a senior, including a season-high 420 yards in Prosser’s season opener.
As a junior he completed 317-of-470 passes (66.2 percent) for 4,600 yards and 66 touchdowns. As a sophomore he connected on 179-of-479 passes (58.1 percent) for 2,442 yards and 39 touchdowns.
“I’m just pretty fortunate to be in the situation I am in,” Moore said. “Coach Petersen and Coach Harsin obviously think I am capable of doing it. I’m just excited at the opportunity.”
When Moore starts against Idaho State, he will become the first Bronco freshman quarterback to start a game since Bart Hendricks started against Louisiana Tech in the eighth game of the 1997 season. Boise State has had four other freshmen start games at quarterback since 1980. Gerald Despres (1981), Hazsen Choates (1983), Keith Jarrett (1986), and Tony Hilde (1993) all started games during their freshmen seasons.
