BOISE, Idaho It was the defense that looked most ready to begin the season under first-year head coach Chris Petersen, Thursday, at the first of three fall scrimmages for the Bronco football team.
Senior Andrew Browning and sophomore Mike T. Williams recorded two sacks apiece, and junior Josh Bean picked off a Bush Hamdan pass to lead an impressive performance by the defense at Bronco Stadium.
Junior Steven Reveles posted 1.5 sacks, senior Colt Brooks and junior Mike Altieri each recorded one sack, and sophomore Sean Bingham had half a sack to give the defense eight total sacks on the day. Freshman Will Lawrence also recovered a fumble.
However, it wasn’t all defense, all the time. Sophomore Ian Johnson rushed for 34 yards on eight carries. Johnson capped off a 60-yard, seven-play drive with a five-yard touchdown. Fellow sophomore Vinny Perretta rushed for 31 yards on four carries and junior Jon Helmandollar had five carries for 20 yards.
Sophomore Bush Hamdan had the best passing performance for the Broncos, completing 8-of-13 passes for 112 yards and a touchdown. Starting quarterback Jared Zabransky completed 5-of-13 passes for 67 yards, junior Taylor Tharp completed 5-of-9 for 69 yards, freshman Nick Lomax went 3-for-6 for 14 yards, and freshman Mike Coughlin completed 2-of-3 for 15 yards.
Senior Jerard Rabb led the squad with three receptions for 28 yards, and Helmandollar had two receptions for 40 yards. Five others also had two receptions.
The Broncos’ next scrimmage, which is also open to the public, is scheduled for Aug. 18 with practice beginning at 6:30 p.m. and the scrimmage beginning at 7:15 p.m.
