BOISE, Idaho - Kyle Wilson, senior cornerback at Boise State University, has been named to the 2009 Jim Thorpe Award preseason watch list. The Thorpe award honors the nation's top collegiate defensive back each year.
One of 31 candidates on the preseason watch list, Wilson was recently named to the 2009 Playboy magazine preseason All-America team and was selected by media members of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) as the 2009 preseason defensive player of the year. USA Today also selected Wilson as one of the top 32 collegiate seniors this season.
Last year Wilson made 35 tackles and intercepted five passes. He also returned 33 punts for 370 yards and three touchdowns. Wilson earned first team All-WAC honors in 2008, along with receiving second-team All-American honors from SI.com as a punt returner.
The screening committee of the Jim Thorpe Association will narrow the watch list down to 10 or 12 semifinalists in early November. The three finalists will be named later that month, and the 2009 Jim Thorpe Award winner will be announced on December 10 (Thursday) during The Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards show.
Boise State, ranked No. 16 in the USA Today Coaches' preseason poll, opens its 2009 season on September 3 (Thursday) at home against the University of Oregon. Kickoff against the 14th ranked Ducks is 8:15 p.m. (MT) with the game being broadcast by ESPN.
