Ajayi Named Preseason Candidate for Doak Walker Award

July 17, 2014

DALLAS - Boise State redshirt junior Jay Ajayi has been named a preseason candidate for the 2014 Doak Walker Award, given annually to the nation's top running back.

He is one of three running backs from the Mountain West on the 53-member watch list.

Ajayi had already been named to the 2014 Maxwell Award Watch List, given annually to the nation's College Player of the Year, and was named one of 12 Players to Watch in 2014 by the Touchdown Club of Columbus earlier this year.

Ajayi rushed for 1,425 yards on 249 carries in 2013, and his 18 rushing touchdowns last season were the eighth-most in the country. He has averaged 5.96 yards per carry through his two seasons as a Bronco, the seventh-highest average nationally amongst active players with more than 250 career attempts.

He is the only offensive member of the 2013 All-MW First Team returning in 2014, and his yardage total from last season is the fourth-highest nationally returning for this season. Ajayi averaged 8.8 points scored per game in 2013, ranking 21st-nationally, and his 109.6 yards per game ranked 19th-nationally.

Semifinalists for the Doak Walker Award will be named Nov. 18, and finalists will be announced, Nov. 24. The recipient of the 2014 Doak Walker Award will be announced live on the Home Depot College Football Awards Show, Dec. 11.
