BOISE, Idaho – Boise State linebacker Tanner Vallejo was named to the Butkus Award Preseason Watch List, the Butkus Foundation announced Tuesday.

It is the second preseason watch list to which Vallejo has been named in 2016. Friday he was named a candidate for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy. He is one of 51 candidates for the Butkus Award, and one of three from the Mountain West alongside Colorado State’s Kevin Davis and Fresno State’s Jeff Camilli.

Vallejo has twice earned All-Mountain West honors, being named honorable mention in 2015 after earning a spot on the second team in 2014.

Over 12 games (10 starts) in 2015, he finished with 57 tackles (32 solo), third-best on the team, tied for second with a pair of forced fumbles and tied for fourth with 8.0 tackles-for-loss over 12 games (10 starts).

He was instrumental in Boise State’s defensive effort in last season’s 16-13 victory over Washington, leading the Broncos with seven tackles. Two weeks later, against Idaho State (Sept. 18), he blocked a punt and a field goal, earning himself Mountain West Special Teams Player of the Week. In the regular-season finale at San Jose State, Vallejo led the team with nine tackles including a tackle-for-loss.

The campaign followed a 2014 performance in which he finished fifth in the Mountain West with 16.5 TFL and led the Broncos with 100 tackles (64 solo) and three fumble recoveries. He capped the 2014 season by being named the VIZIO Fiesta Bowl Defensive MVP after making a team-high 14 tackles (10 solo) with 1.5 sacks in Boise State’s 38-30 victory over No. 10 Arizona.

Five Broncos have been named to a total of five preseason watch lists in 2016, as Vallejo is joined by Boise State quarterback Brett Rypien (Maxwell Award), running back Jeremy McNichols (Maxwell Award), tight end Jake Roh (Mackey Award) and Tyler Rausa (Lou Groza Award) as preseason award candidates.

Boise State opens the 2016 season Saturday, Sept. 3 at Louisiana. The Broncos’ home opener is the following Saturday, Sept. 10, against Washington State.

The winner of the 2016 Bronko Nagurski Trophy will be announced in early 2017.
