July 7, 2014

BOISE, Idaho - Boise State football student-athletes Jay Ajayi and Shane Williams-Rhodes were each named to preseason watch lists for the 2014 season, Monday.

Ajayi, a redshirt junior running back, was named to the watch list for the Maxwell Award, given annually to the nation's College Player of the Year.

Williams-Rhodes, a junior wide receiver and return specialist, was named to the Paul Hornung Award Watch List, given annually to the most versatile player in college football.

Ajayi is one of four players from the Mountain West on the 76-member Maxwell Award Watch List.

Williams-Rhodes is one of only three players from the MW on the 47-member Hornung Award Watch List.

Ajayi rushed for 1,425 yards on 249 carries in 2013, and his 18 rushing touchdowns last season were the eighth-most in the country. He has averaged 5.96 yards per carry through his two seasons as a Bronco, the seventh-highest average nationally amongst active players with more than 250 career attempts.

Williams-Rhodes ranked 11th-nationally and led the MW in punt returns last season, averaging 14.6 yards per return. Additionally, he caught 77 passes in 11 games, the fourth-most in school history. His 77 catches, 702 yards and six touchdowns each ranked second on the team.

Semifinalists for the Maxwell Award will be announced Nov. 3, and the three finalists will be unveiled Nov. 24. The winner will be announced at the Home Depot College Football Awards Show, Dec. 11.

The winner of the Hornung Award will be honored at the Paul Hornung Award Banquet in late January.

The Broncos are entering their first season under head coach Bryan Harsin, a former Bronco quarterback (1995-99) who also served on the coaching staff from 2001-10. With Harsin as offensive coordinator from 2006-10, Boise State went 61-5, including undefeated seasons in 2006 (13-0) and 2009 (14-0). The Broncos scored 2,733 points during that time, the most in the country.
