BOISE, Idaho - Boise State defensive backs coach Ashley Ambrose has been named to the 2018 College Football Hall of Fame ballot, the National Football Foundation announced Thursday.

He is among 98 players and 31 coaches from the divisional ranks included on the ballot, along with 75 players and six coaches from the Football Subdivision (FBS). More than 12,000 NFF members and current Hall of Famers will vote, with their ballots being submitted to the NFF Honors Court, which will select the class.

Ambrose, entering his second year on the Bronco staff in 2017, played four seasons at Mississippi Valley State (1988-91), intercepting 17 passes and recording 110 tackles. Following his senior campaign, in which he led the nation in punt returns, he was named a first-team All-American as well as being tabbed SWAC Defensive Back and Return Specialist of the Year and to the All-SWAC First Team. Over his career, Ambrose took three kicks and four punts for touchdowns. He went on to graduate in 1992 with a bachelor's degree in industrial technology.

Ambrose played 13 seasons in the NFL (1992-2004) with the Indianapolis Colts (1992-95), Cincinnati Bengals (1996-98), Atlanta Falcons (2000-02) and New Orleans Saints (1999, 2003-04). He was named an All-Pro and AFC Defensive Back of the Year in 1996 after recording a career-best eight interceptions (second-most in the league) with the Bengals. Over 192 games played (of which he started 141), Ambrose hauled in 42 interceptions, three of which he returned for touchdown. He also broke up 35 passes and registered 514 tackles (464 solo).

Over his eight seasons coaching college football, Ambrose has had four of his defensive backs see action in the NFL, with three (Jimmy Smith and Jalil Brown from Colorado, and D.J. Campbell from California) being selected in the NFL Draft. During his first season at Boise State in 2016, Ambrose's tutelage helped cornerback Jonathan Moxey to a career season in which he broke up a team-high 13 passes and made a career-best 50 tackles. Moxey was signed to a free-agent deal by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in April 2016.

The 2018 College Football Hall of Fame Class will be announced Jan. 8, 2018, in Atlanta, and the class will be officially inducted during the 61st NFF Annual Awards Dinner held Dec. 4, 2018, in New York.
