Defense Victorious in Blue & Orange Spring Game
BOISE, Idaho – Boise State’s defense defeated its offensive counterparts 21-13 at the Blue & Orange Spring Game presented by Groove Entertainment Technologies Saturday, at Bronco Stadium.

The Bronco defense - the blue team - received points based on forced three-and-outs (one point), sacks (two points), turnovers (three points) and holding the offense to a field goal in the red zone (one point).

Accounted for in the scoring for the defense were six three-and-outs, five sacks, a turnover and two red zone stops. Another sack was credited to Jarrell Root in the official statistics, but was not accounted for in the scoring.

Offensively, the Broncos were successful on two field goals – one each from Dan Goodale (31 yards) and Michael Frisina (27 yards) – and a 10-yard touchdown run from freshman quarterback Grant Hedrick on the final play of the game.

In addition to Root, Tyler Horn, Hazen Moss, Billy Winn, Shea McClellin and Jamar Taylor each recorded a sack, six of the defense’s 11 tackles-for-loss.

Bryan Douglas recorded the lone interception on the afternoon.

Kellen Moore completed 5-of-14 passes for 50 yards in three series, while Joe Southwick completed 7-of-17 for 120 yards and Hedrick completed 7-of-13 for 52 yards.

Geraldo Hiwat led the receivers with five catches and 97 yards, including a 49-yarder from Southwick, the longest offensive play of the game.

Drew Wright led the Broncos on the ground with eight carries and 24 yards.

Boise State will open its 2011 season against Georgia in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game, Sept. 3. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. (MT) at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, Ga., and the game will be televised by ESPN.
