BOISE, Idaho - The Mountain West Conference announced its 2012 football schedule today with Boise State opening its league schedule on Sept. 29 (Saturday) at the University of New Mexico.
The conference office only announced dates for its 2012 season. In several weeks a second announcement will be made which will include kickoff times and a list of games that will be broadcast on television stations affiliated with the Mountain West. The possibility still exists that some games could be moved to a non-Saturday slot for television and kickoff times are very fluid.
Boise State's first Mountain West home game will be Oct. 13 (Saturday) against Fresno State. The Bulldogs, Nevada and Hawai'i are first year members of the Mountain West.
For the fourth straight year the Broncos will open their regular season against a nationally ranked opponent from one of the Bowl Championship Series automatic qualifying conferences.
Boise State travels to East Lansing, Michigan, on Aug. 31 (Friday) to face Big-10 Conference member Michigan State for a game scheduled to be broadcast on ESPN. Michigan State finished the 2011 season ranked No. 10 in the USA Today Coaches poll, and No. 11 in the Associated Press media poll.
This will mark the second time in history the Broncos have faced a team from the Big-10. The other meeting came in 1997 when Boise State lost to Wisconsin, 28-24, in Madison.
The Broncos are undefeated in their three previous season opening games against BCS opponents. They include a 19-8 victory over No. 16 Oregon in 2009 at Bronco Stadium; a 33-30 victory over No. 7 Virginia Tech at FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland in 2010; and a 35-21 victory over No. 19 Georgia in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game in Atlanta, Georgia last season.
In those games, Boise State was ranked No. 14 when it played Oregon, No. 3 versus Virginia Tech and No. 5 against Georgia.
Six of Boise State's 2012 opponents competed in post-season bowl games last year, producing a record of 3-3. Michigan State defeated Georgia 33-30 at the Outback Bowl; BYU defeated Tulsa 24-12 at the Armed Forces Bowl; Southern Miss. defeated another opponent on Boise State's 2012 schedule, Nevada 24-17, at the Shearton Hawai'i Bowl; Wyoming lost Temple 37-15 at the Gildan New Mexico State; and San Diego State lost to Louisiana-Lafayette, 32-30 in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl.
Boise State has two open dates on their 2012 schedule. The first is Sept. 8 (Saturday) and the second is on the last weekend of the regular season, Dec. 1 (Saturday).
Following is the current 2012 schedule. A reminder that the schedule is still tentative and dates could be moved.
