BOISE, Idaho Winston Venable, a transfer from Glendale Community College, has signed a national letter of intent with the Bronco football team and is enrolled in classes at Boise State University for the 2009 spring semester.  Head coach Chris Petersen made the announcement today (Jan. 20). 

                A 6-0, 210 safety from San Rafael, CA, Venable played the past two years at Glendale CC earning first team All-America and first team All-Arizona honors as a defensive back, and first team All-Western State Football League honors as a punter in 2008.

                This past season Venable made 94 total tackles, after finishing his freshman season with 97. 

                Venable played his junior and senior years of high school football at St. Thomas More Prep in Oakdale, CT earning first team All-Colonial Prep Football League honors.  Venable was a two-way starter playing strong safety on defense and quarterback on offense where he passed for over 1,300 yards and 12 touchdowns his senior season.  He was also named New England Player of the Year as a senior. 

                Petersen also announced today that Spencer Gerke, who originally signed with Boise State in February of 2008, has joined the Bronco team this semester.  An offensive guard at Bishop Kelly High School in Boise, Gerke was a first team all-state offensive and defensive lineman in his senior season of 2007.  On defense he made 69 tackles, seven pass breakups, two quarterback sacks and one interception his senior year.
