BOISE, Idaho The 2008 has been over for only less than a month, but Stewart Mandel of SI.com has already announced his initial college football top 25 for the 2009 season and has positioned Boise State University at No. 10.
Head coach Chris Petersen, who is entering his fourth season at the helm of the Bronco program with an overall record of 35-4 (.897%), returns 13 starters from a team which posted an undefeated regular season (12-0) and won its sixth Western Athletic Conference Championship in the past seven years.
The Broncos ended the season 12-1 following a 17-16 loss to seventh ranked TCU in the Poinsettia Bowl. Boise State, which was ranked No. 9 at the end of the regular season, finished the 2008 year ranked 11th in the Associated Press media poll and 13th in the USA Today Coaches poll.
In his article posted today (Jan. 20), Mandel mentioned the return of cornerback Kyle Wilson, quarterback Kellen Moore, running back Jeremy Avery, defensive end Ryan Winterswyk and safety Jeron Johnson as keys to Boise State’s success in 2009.
Boise State’s opening opponent in 2009, the University of Oregon, was selected ninth setting up a key national matchup the first weekend in September 5 (Saturday) when the Ducks visit Bronco Stadium. Boise State handed Oregon a 37-32 loss last season in Eugene.
Defending national champion Florida was selected No. 1 with Texas, Oklahoma, USC and Ole Miss rounding out the top five in that order.
