Boise State Returns Home for Double Header Against Eastern Washington
BOISE STATE RETURNS HOME FOR DOUBLEHEADER WITH EASTERN WASHINGTON: The Boise State men’s basketball team (8-3) returns home to take on its final nonconference opponent before opening WAC play, Monday, Dec. 29, against Eastern Washington at approximately 8:15 p.m. at Taco Bell Arena. The men’s game will tip-off 30 minutes after the Boise State women’s basketball team plays Arizona, which begins at 6 p.m. (MST).
DOUBLE THE FUN: With the women tipping off at 6 p.m. against Arizona, this marks the third double-header of the season. Arrive prior to halftime of the women’s basketball game and see both teams in action for only $5!
ABOUT THE EASTERN WASHINGTON EAGLES (7-5, 1-0 BIG SKY): The Roadrunners have posted a record of 7-5 overall, and are 1-0 in conference play ... Eastern’s 6-2 record after the first eight games was its best start since the 2002-03 season when EWU used a four-game winning streak to improve to 7-2 ... Expect junior transfer Benny Valentine to be a major impact player for the Eagles as he not only leads the team averaging 15.9 points per game ... Not to be overshadowed is Brandon Moore, who led EWU in scoring in three games, is averaging 11.5 points per game and is the leading rebounder with 7.1 rebounds per game ... Head Coach Kirk Earlywine is in his second season at the helm after leading the Eagles to an 11-19 record overall and 6-10 Big Sky Conference mark last season.
LAST TIME AGAINST EASTERN WASHINGTON (DEC. 29, 2006): Coby Karl led a quartette of Broncos in double figures with 16 points as Boise State defeated Eastern Washington 76-72 ... Leading all scorers was the Eagles’ Rodney Stuckey as he tallied an impressive 34 points, sinking 6-of-9 from beyond the arc ... Boise State’s Eric Lane added 14 points, while Kareem Lloyd and Seth Robinson each notched 12 points to the Broncos total ... As a team, Boise State outshot Eastern Washington making 48.2 percent of its shots compared to 45.1 by the Eagles.
THE BRONCOS AGAINST THE EAGLES: Historically, the Broncos lead the series against the Eagles 28-6 ... The last time Eastern posted a win over Boise State was during Coach Graham’s first season (2002-03) when the Eagles beat the Broncos 65-59 on Boise State’s home court ... Overall, Greg Graham owns a record of 2-1 against Eastern Washington ... The series between the two teams began during Boise State’s inaugural season (1968-69) under coach Murray Satterfield as the Broncos posted an 87-78 win over EWU.
RADIO: KIDO (580 & 630 AM) in Boise, will broadcast the game live with Bob Behler providing the play-by-play. Former Boise State basketball player Abe Jackson handles color commentary. The games can also be heard on the Boise State Broncos Radio Network in Twin Falls (KSNQ 98.3 FM), Pocatello (KWIK 1240AM), Idaho Falls (KID 590AM), Sun Valley (KYZK 107.5FM), and McCall (KDZY 98.3 FM). KIDO, which is in its first year as the home of the Broncos, will broadcast every Boise State game.
TELEVISION: There is no TV for the Eastern Washington game. Fans can log on to broncosports.com and watch all home games. COACH GRAHAM VS. THE BIG SKY CONFERENCE: During coach Graham’s seven year tenure at Boise State, he has posted a record of 15-6 against Big Sky opponents ... This marks the third time this season the Broncos have faced off against a school from the Big Sky and currently own a record of 2-0 this season against the conference, posting wins over Idaho State and Montana State ... Last season, Boise State went 1-1 against the Big Sky after posting a win over Idaho State and falling to Montana State.
THOMAS DISHES OUT RECORD: Junior guard Anthony Thomas carved his way into the Boise State record books as he dished out seven assists against CSUB, taking his season total to 55 and his career total to 246 ... Thomas returned to the floor two days later at San Diego where he tallied five assists raising his career total to 251 ... He currently ranks eighth in the Bronco record book in career assist total and is just 24 shy of seventh, currently held by Doug Usitalo (275).
BRONCOS CAPITALIZE ON CUNNINGHAM: Last week on the road, junior Kurt Cunningham went 3‐for‐3 from the line and extended his streak of consecutive free throws made to 14 ... Cunningham, who currently leads the WAC in shooting percentage, went 2‐for‐2 from the field at CSU Bakersfield and 6‐for‐10 from the field at San Diego, marking his 11th consecutive game in which he shot 50 percent or better from the floor.
GAME NINE LOSS EQUALS GAME TEN WIN: Over the last 15 seasons, when the Broncos have lost their ninth game of the season, they have turned around to win their 10th ... Keeping with tradition, Boise State was victorious in its 10th game of the season beating out CSU Bakersfield, 66-62, after falling in its ninth game of the year to San Francisco, 76-79 ... Boise State has turned a game nine loss into a game 10 victory in six seasons (1998, 2000, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009) ... Four of those six came under coach Graham ... The last time the Broncos lost games nine and 10 was during the 1993-94 season when Boise State started off the year 5-5, but went on to finish the season at 17-13, 7-7 in conference play, and won the Big Sky Conference Tournament.
GAME 10 IS A HISTORICAL SEASON MAKE-OR-BREAKER: In the last 10 seasons, the Broncos have started at 6-4 five times and have only finished that season above .500 once (17-14 in 2001 under Head Coach Rod Jensen) ... However, the two seasons in which Boise State has started at 7-3, the Broncos have gone on to post 20+ wins and were conference champions (1999 and 2008) ... The Broncos are currently 8-3, which was last done in both 1999 and 2008.
