The Spartans will be the highest-ranked team Boise State has faced on a neutral court.
ABOUT MICHIGAN STATE: The Spartans (5-0) are led by senior Denzel Valentine who posted his second triple-double of the season Thursday, against Boston College. Valentine is averaging 15.3 points, 9.0 rebounds and 9.8 assists per game on the year. Head coach Tom Izzo is in his 21st season at the helm and earned his 500th win Thursday, in the tournament's opening round.
SERIES HISTORY: The Broncos and Spartans have met twice previously, including once during Leon Rice's tenure. Michigan State leads the series 2-0 with wins in 1982(71-59) and 2012 (74-70). The Nov. 20, 2012, encounter is detailed below.
NOV. 20, 2012: One of the first statements Leon Rice and Boise State made on the national stage came Nov. 20, 2012, at Michigan State. The Broncos fell 74-70 to the 15th-ranked Spartans, but the message was sent that Boise State men's basketball was on the rise. Rice's young squad led by as many as nine and was within two at 70-68 with 40 seconds to play. before Michigan State escaped with the win. Anthony Drmic and Mikey Thompson both played significant roles in the 2012 game and are expected to start Friday, against the Spartans. Thompson posted a then-career-high 14 points as a redshirt freshman playing in just his fourth collegiate game. The Broncos went on to win at No. 11 Creighton the next week en route to the NCAA Tournament, earning the first at-large bid in program history.
SEEKING REDEMPTION: Redshirt senior Anthony Drmic was a sophomore on the team that narrowly lost to Michigan State. Drmic was held to six points and committed five turnovers in the loss. He was 2-for-7 from the field and 0-for-2 from three-point range as the Broncos were limited to 1-off-6 shooting beyond the arc in the decisive second half.
VS THE BIG TEN: Boise State is 0-8 all-time against the Big Ten. Friday will mark the fifth time in eight years the Broncos have taken on a member of the conference, including the second against Michigan State.
CHALLENGE ACCEPTED: Friday will be Boise State's 22nd game against a top-25 opponent since Leon Rice took over as head coach. The Broncos played 20 ranked teams in the 25 years prior to Rice's arrival.
VS THE POWER FIVE: Under Leon Rice, Boise State is 5-1 in home or neutral-site games against opponents from the power five conferences. The lone loss was a 70-66 setback against No. 14 Iowa State in the title game of the 2013 Diamond Head Classic (Dec. 25, 2013).
DRMIC MOVES UP: Anthony Drmic has 1,603 points in his career and moved ahead of Chris Childs on Boise State's all-time scoring list Thursday, now sitting No. 6 in school history. He is 341 points shy of Tanoka Beard's program record (1,944 points). Drmic has scored at least 20 points in three of his first four games this season.
