Broncos Suffer First Loss of the Season

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Freshman Anthony Drmic notched his second 20-point outing of the season, but the Broncos fell to Long Beach State 72-62 in the team’s first road game of the season Tuesday at the Walter Pyramid.

Drmic knocked down five 3-pointers en route to 20 points, becoming just the third Bronco to record multiple 20-point games in his freshman season in the last 18 years.

Long Beach State (3-1) handed the Broncos their first loss of the season for the second-straight year. After tying the school record with a 6-0 start in 2010-11, the Broncos fell 69-66 at Taco Bell Arena, Dec. 5, 2010.

Boise State (3-1) got off to a slow start in this year’s meeting, scoring just seven points through the first 13-plus minutes of the game. The 49ers capitalized to the tune of an 18-point advantage (33-15), but the Broncos scored the final nine points of the period to cut their deficit in half entering intermission (33-24).

Junior center Kenny Buckner kept the Broncos in the game during the first 20 minutes, scoring 12 of his 14 points in the first half. He went 2-of-2 from the floor and 8-of-9 from the free throw line before Boise State started to hit from the outside.

After starting 1-for-10 from the 3-point line, Boise State knocked down two in the final two minutes of the first half – including one from Drmic as time expired before intermission.

Boise State scored the first bucket of the second half, cutting LBSU’s advantage to seven (33-26), but a 16-4 49er run over the next five-plus minutes pushed the home team’s lead back to 19.

Boise State closed the game on 17-4 run, but they were unable to overcome LBSU despite holding senior guard Casper Ware to five points. Ware had entered tonight’s contest averaging 24.7 points per game.

Boise State returns home to face Northern Illinois Saturday (Nov. 26) at 7 p.m.
