SAN DIEGO – Robert Arnold and La’Shard Anderson combined for 42 points in leading the Boise State men’s basketball team past San Diego 65-60 at Jenny Craig Pavilion, Friday.

The Broncos improved to 2-0 on the season and won their first true road opener since Nov. 21, 2003.

“This was kind of a gutty win because we created a lot of adversity for ourselves early on - with foul trouble and some missed some lay-ups, and maybe a bit of nerves,” head coach Leon Rice said. “But we didn’t get rattled. We stayed together and kept sawing wood.”

Boise State overcame a slow start to notch the win, falling behind 10-0 to start the game after going scoreless for the first five minutes of play. San Diego kept Boise State from finding its rhythm for the game’s first 10 minutes, but once the Toreros extended their lead back to double digits (21-11) midway through the first half, the Broncos put together a 13-2 run.

Nine of the 13 points came from Arnold – who finished with 14 first-half points – and the Broncos claimed their first lead of the game at 24-23. The Toreros outscored the Broncos 9-3 over the final six minutes of the opening stanza however, and entered intermission with a 32-27 advantage.

The script to start the second half was virtually identical to the first, only this time the balance was tipped in the Broncos’ favor. Boise State scored the first nine points, and the Toreros were held without a field goal for nearly five minutes.

The teams would swap leads seven times in the second half, but redshirt senior forward Paul Noonan nailed his first 3-pointer of the game with seven minutes remaining to put Boise State up 56-54, and the Broncos held on for the win.

Anderson, the Broncos’ starting point guard, sat for a majority of the first half after falling into foul trouble. The San Diego product scored 14 second-half points to help keep the Broncos in the game, and finished with 17 points.

Arnold scored a game-high 25 points, while senior forward Daequon Montreal pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds. The Broncos out-rebounded the Toreros 44-25.

Boise State will complete its two-game road trip at UC Davis Sunday at 2 p.m. (MT).
