Boise State in 2016 Charleston Classic
Nov. 19, 2015

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Boise State men’s basketball will play at the 2016 Gildan Charleston Classic, ESPN Events announced Thursday. The eight-team field also includes College of Charleston, Mississippi State, Central Florida, UTEP, Villanova, Wake Forest and Western Michigan.

The tournament will be played Nov. 17, 18 and 20, at TD Arena in Charleston, S.C. The family-friendly tournament offers teams a week of practice, play and experiences in and around historic Charleston.

The Charleston Classic will be Boise State’s third appearance in four years at an ESPN-owned early-season exempt tournament. The Broncos advanced to the championship game of the 2013 Diamond Head Classic and will take part in the 2015 DirecTV Wooden Legacy Nov. 26-29, in Southern California.

Prior to head coach Leon Rice’s arrival, Boise State had not played in a major early-season tournament since the 2000 Pearl Harbor Classic.

Of the eight-team field, Boise State has only previously met UTEP and Western Michigan on the hardwood. The Broncos and Miners were formerly conference foes in the Western Athletic Conference. UTEP owns a 6-5 all-time series lead, last meeting in 2005. Boise State and Western Michigan have split two contests, squaring off in 1981 and again in 1991.

Villanova is currently ranked No. 11 in the Associated Press Top 25 and is coming off a No. 1 seed in the last year’s NCAA Tournament. UTEP participated in the NIT and Western Michigan advanced to the CollegeInsider.com Tournament.
