Anthony Thomas Named to Preseason Second Team All-WAC Basketball Team/Team Picked Fifth in Both Polls

DENVER, Colo. Boise State University junior guard Anthony Thomas was named a preseason second-team All-WAC selection by the league’s coaches today, while the men’s basketball team was picked fifth in the WAC coaches and media poll.

Thomas was selected to the second team and becomes just the third Bronco player named to the preseason second team, joining the ranks of Matt Nelson (2007-08 season) and Coby Karl (2005-06) as previous second-team picks. As a sophomore, Thomas started in all 34 games and averaged 8.5 points and 2.5 rebounds per game. He led the Broncos with 49 steals and finished the season ranked fifth in the WAC with an assist/turnover ratio of 1.55.

The Broncos totaled 30 points in the coaches’ poll to finish behind San Jose State, New Mexico State, Utah State and Nevada.  The Broncos, who took the WAC title and won the conference tournament last season with a 12-4 league record and 25-9 overall record, finished ahead of Louisiana Tech, Hawai’i, Fresno State and Idaho.

Boise State garnered 142 points and received three first-place votes in the media poll and finished behind Louisiana Tech, New Mexico State, Utah State and Nevada, and ahead of San Jose State, Fresno State, Hawai’i and Idaho in the coaches poll.

The Broncos open practice for the 2007-08 season on Friday, with their first exhibition game featuring a double-header with the women’s team on Saturday, Nov. 1, against Guelph and their first regular season game on Friday, Nov. 14, against Pacific University (Oregon).  Boise State travels to Siena for their second regular season game of the season before returning home for a five-game home stand, beginning Saturday, Nov. 22 against Idaho State.
