Rivalry Renewed in Puerto Rico
July 26, 2017

BOISE, Idaho - Boise State men’s basketball will open the Puerto Rico Tip Off against UTEP, ESPN Events announced Wednesday. The Broncos and Miners will square off in the second game of the tournament, tipping off at 3 p.m. AT/noon MT Thursday, Nov. 16, at the Coliseo Municipal Tomas Dones.

Boise State’s second game will be against either Illinois State or South Carolina. The Gamecocks advanced to last year’s Final Four, while the Redbirds joined the Broncos in the second round of the NIT. The opposite side of the bracket features Appalachian State against Iowa State and Tulsa against Western Michigan.

This will mark the 12th all-time meeting between Boise State and UTEP in men’s basketball, with the previous 11 all coming while both schools were members of the Western Athletic Conference. The last meeting saw UTEP end Boise State’s Cinderella run at the 2005 WAC Tournament. The eighth-seeded Broncos won three times to reach the title game, including a quarterfinal win against top-seeded and 24th-ranked Nevada on the Wolf Pack’s home floor, before running out of gas against the No. 2 seed Miners. Boise State and UTEP shared a conference for four seasons, meeting in the conference tournament three times.

All 12 games of the 2017 Puerto Rico Tip Off will be televised on the ESPN Family of Networks. Boise State’s opening game will be carried on ESPNU. Every team in the tournament is guaranteed three games. The second round will be played Friday, Nov. 17, with the event concluding Sunday, Nov. 19. All 12 games will be played in Fajardo, at the Coliseo Municipal Tomas Dones.
