Australia into Quarters at WUGs

KAZAN, Russia - Australia will advance to the quarterfinals after finishing second in Group C at the World University Games. The Emerging Boomers finished 4-1 in the preliminary round after cruising to a 131-43 victory Friday, against United Arab Emirates.

Boise State rising junior Igor Hadziomerovic tallied 14 points, six rebounds and two assists in 18 minutes in the pool-play finale. Australia held a 100-28 advantage after three quarters. The Boomers led by as many as 93 points in the fourth quarter before UAE scored the final five points of the game.

Canada finished Group C play at 5-0, after defeating the United States Friday, relegating Team USA to third place and the consolation round. Australia’s victory against the United States Thursday, was just the 10th loss all-time for Team USA at the World University Games. After the loss to Canada, the United States is now 141-10 at the tournament. Australia is one of seven countries to own a victory against the USA’s World University Games team.

Australia will take on Lithuania Sunday, in the fourth quarterfinal. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. (MT), and will be streamed live on ESPN3. Lithuania was the top qualifier out of Group D with a 5-0 mark.

The Aussies are guaranteed to finish in the top eight. Australia’s all-time best finish at the World University Games is seventh, accomplishing that in back-to-back tournaments in 2003 and 2005.
