July 2, 2013

LANZHOU, China - Boise State rising junior Igor Hadziomerovic and the Australia Emerging Boomers marched through the Stankovic Continental Cup to a 5-0 record and the gold medal, capped by a 76-61 win Tuesday, against Nigeria.

Hadziomerovic scored nine points on 4-of-6 shooting in the finale. After a strong first quarter from Australia, Nigeria charged back to tie the game in the second stanza. Australia rallied back in front, including a buzzer beater from Hadziomerovic to take a 37-30 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Boomers defeated Argentina (62-59), China (64-59), Puerto Rico (72-68), Germany (79-64) and Nigeria (76-61), as they played five games in six days and claimed the top spot. Hadziomerovic was held out of the first three games for precautionary reasons. Statistics from the game against Germany are unavailable, but the Bronco guard did see action in the game.

Hadziomerovic and Australia will now travel to Kazan, Russia, for the 2013 World University Games. The tournament takes place July 7-16, beginning with pool play. Australia is in Group C with Canada, Czech Republic, Sweden, United Arab Emirates and United States.

Australia advanced to the round of 12 with two wins in group play, but has dropped its first two contests in Group F competition.

The Emus fell to China Monday, before losing again Tuesday, against the United States. They now face a must-win game Wednesday, against Russia. The winner of that game will be the fourth and final team to advance out of Group F and into the quarterfinals.
