April 13, 2016

BOISE, Idaho - Phil Beckner has been hired as an assistant coach for the Boise State men’s basketball team, head coach Leon Rice announced Wednesday.

“Phil is a great addition to our staff,” Rice said. “He’s a diligent recruiter and an outstanding basketball coach with experience beyond his years. Phil is committed to and very skilled at player development. He’ll be a terrific fit with our staff and our beliefs.”

Beckner has been a collegiate assistant coach for six seasons, plus one year as an assistant coach in the NBA Developmental League. He joins the Broncos after one season at Nebraska. The Cornhuskers led the Big Ten in steals per game last year, and featured two of the top six scorers in the conference.

Beckner spent the 2014-15 season on staff with the Oklahoma City Blue, the NBA D-League affiliate of the Oklahoma City Thunder. Prior to his stint at the professional ranks Beckner was on staff at Weber State for seven seasons, including five as an assistant coach after serving as the director of operations for two years.

A highly-regarded player developer, Beckner worked closely with NBA All-Star Damian Lillard during his time at Weber State and preparing to be the sixth overall selection in the 2012 NBA Draft. Beckner also helped recruit and coach four more Wildcats who earned Big Sky Conference MVP honors

Beckner was responsible for the defense at Weber State. The Wildcats led the Big Sky in scoring defense, field goal percentage defense, three-point field goal percentage defense and rebounding margin during a 2013-14 campaign that saw them reach the NCAA Tournament. Weber State ranked No. 2 nationally in three-point field goal percentage defense in 2012-13, en route to 30 wins.

Beckner was a four-year letterwinner at Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina, Kan., where he earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education in 2005. Upon graduation he returned home to Buckeye, Ariz., to teach and coach at Buckeye High School, helping the boys’ basketball team to the 2006 state title.

Phil Beckner on Joining Boise State…
“I’m thoroughly excited to be a part of Boise State University and the men’s basketball program,” Beckner said. “It’s a great program out west that has had a lot of success under Leon Rice with tournament appearances and 20-win seasons. The opportunity to work with Coach Rice and the rest of the staff is really exciting and intriguing to me. I look forward to being able to help continue to build what they’ve started.”

“Boise State has done a good job of recruiting high-character, talented kids who fit their system,” said Beckner. “I remember watching some of them play in high school and am really excited about working with them. Guys like Paris Austin, Alex Hobbs and Nick Duncan have already reached out to me. It’s great knowing I’m coming into an environment with a good nucleus of young kids and experienced veterans who have seen a high level of success and are hungry for more. I look forward to the opportunity to help make them better people and better players.”
