BOISE, Idaho - Boise State men's basketball was selected to the National Invitation Tournament, the NCAA announced Sunday. The Broncos will open tournament play Tuesday at Utah at 8 p.m. MT on ESPNU. Boise State (19-11) is a No. 6 seed and making its fifth all-time appearance in the NIT and first since 2004.

This marks Boise State's 14th postseason appearance in school history, including the fourth in Leon Rice's seven seasons as head coach. Rice has led the Broncos to two NCAA Tournaments, one NIT and one College Basketball Invitational (CBI) berth.

The third-seeded Utes enter the tournament with a 20-11 record and finished fourth in the Pac-12. The meeting between Utah and Boise State will be the eighth all-time, and the second time in an NIT game. The Broncos defeated Utah 62-61 in the 1987 NIT at Taco Bell Arena. The two schools recently completed a four-year home-and-home series, with the home team winning each game. The Broncos won the last meeting 69-67 (Dec. 3, 2013).

Played annually since 1938, the NIT is the original and oldest national postseason tournament in college basketball. The NIT is a 32-team field with the first three rounds hosted on campus sites before the semifinals and championship are played at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Boise State is 3-4 all-time in the NIT, previously appearing in the tournament in 1987, 1989, 1991 and 2004. The Broncos won two games in the 2004 tournament, which was a 40-team field.
