Boise State Men's Basketball Heads to California to Take on San Jose State

BRONCOS TRAVEL TO THE BAY AREA TO TAKE ON SAN JOSE STATE UNIVERSITY:  The Boise State men’s basketball team makes its second trip down to the Golden State this season as the Broncos head to the Bay Area to take on San Jose State, Saturday, February 7 at 7 p.m. PT.

ABOUT THE SAN JOSE STATE SPARTANS (10-10, 4-5 WAC): For the second season in a row, the Spartans have finished January with a 10-10 overall record after posting a win over La Tech, Jan. 31 ... Adding to San Jose State’s record is its success on the road as the Spartans own a record of 5-6 when playing on the road ... The last time SJSU won five road games in a season was in 2000-01 when the Spartans posted a 5-9 road record en route to a 14-14 finish ... The current San Jose State team is the university’s first to win three conference road games in a season since joining the WAC in 1996 ... Leading the way for the Spartans is sophomore Adrian Oliver, who is averaging 17.9 points per game ... Be on the watch for Tim Pierce to be an impact player for San Jose State as he averages 14.3 points and 6.6 rebounds per game ... Defensively, Chris Oakes dominates the boards as he currently ranks second in the WAC in rebounding with 8.1 boards per game.

LAST TIME AGAINST THE SPARTANS (JANUARY 8, 2009): Anthony Thomas scored a game-high 19 points Thursday night to lead Boise State to an 84-64 victory over San Jose State ... Thomas, a junior point guard, had six assists and hit three consecutive 3-pointers in the second half ... Mark Sanchez added 14 points and Ike Okoye contributed 12 points and a team-high six rebounds in the victory. Kurt Cunningham contributed 10 points for the Broncos ... Tim Pierce led San Jose State with 14 points and Justin Graham had 12 points and four assists ... The Broncos extended their winning streak to five games and improved to 18-1 against San Jose State in WAC play ... Boise State shot 54 percent while San Jose State made 36.2 percent of its shots ... The Broncos had seven steals ... The last time Boise State posted a 20 point victory over a WAC opponent was Feb. 7, 2007 when Boise State beat Idaho, 86-63.

THE BRONCOS AGAINST THE SPARTANS: Since joining the WAC, the Broncos lead the series against the Spartans, 18-1 ... The last time San Jose posted a win over Boise State was Feb. 2, 2002 when the Spartans beat out the Broncos 62-51 ... Since taking over at the helm of the Boise State program, the Broncos have yet to lose to the Spartans in the Greg Graham era, owning a record of 13-0 ... San Jose State’s last win over Boise State came on the Spartans home floor.

BRONCO OF THE WEEK: Senior Mark Sanchez re-entered the Broncos starting five with a bang as he led Boise State on the road against Idaho and Houston Baptist, posting back-to-back double-double games ... Thursday’s game at Idaho was his first game back in the starting rotation and he made his presence known as he led Boise State with 18 points and tied his career-high 14 rebounds ...  During Sunday’s contest at Houston Baptist, the forward registered 11 points and 11 rebounds, in addition to five assists ... For his career, Sanchez has recorded just six double-doubles, all of which were recorded this season ... This is the second time this season he has registered a double-double in back-to-back games ... On the week, Sanchez averaged 12.5 rebounds, 14.5 points and 3.5 assists per game, while shooting 57.1 percent from the field ... Sanchez returned to the starting lineup after seeing limited play in the previous week’s two games due to an ankle injury.

COASTING OVER CALIFORNIA: Boise State has faced four teams from the state of California and currently own a record of 3-1 against those from the Golden State ... The Broncos only loss came to San Francisco ... Boise State is 2-0 against teams from southern California and 1-1 against those from northern California.

HIGH SCORING HALF: The 46 points scored in the first half of play against San Jose State were the second most points scored by the Broncos in a half this season ... Boise State recorded 46 in the second half in its 86-85 win over Wyoming (Dec. 2, 2008) ... The only time the Broncos scored more was in their season opener against Pacific when they tallied 56 in the first half of play en route to a 100-68 victory ... In addition, Boise State’s 18 point lead over San Jose State marked the second largest point margin in which the Broncos had over an opponent entering the half ... The largest point margin the Broncos had at the half was 19 when they led Pacific 58-39 at the half, Nov. 14., and went on to win, 100-68.

BACK-TO-BACK 20’s: Boise State improved its record to 15-6 on the season and with nine regular season games left to be played, the Broncos goal of posting yet another 20-win season ... The only other time the Broncos have posted back-to-back 20+ win seasons was under Bobby Dye when they posted three consecutive seasons with 20 or more wins (1986-87, 1987-88, 1988-89).

SHARP SHOOTERS: During the first half of play, the Broncos shot an impressive 58.6 percent ... Boise State has only shot better during a half in five games this season, owning a record of 6-0 in those games ... The Broncos shot 55.4 percent for the game, making 31-of-56 from the floor ... The last time Boise State shot 50 percent or better was Jan. 8, 2009 against San Jose State when the Broncos won 84-64.

DOUBLE THE FUN: Since returning to the starting lineup, senior Mark Sanchez has recorded a double-double in each of the two games as he tallied 11 points and 11 rebounds against the Huskies ... This is his sixth career double-double and is the second time this season he has recorded a double-double in back-to-back games.

BLOCK PARTY: Junior Ike Okoye moved his way into the Boise State record books as he tallied three blocks against the Bulldogs, pushing his season block total to 40 ... He currently sits in sixth, but is just two shy of fifth, which is currently held by Reggie Larry with 44 during the 2006-07 season ... The single season record is currently held by John Coker with 77 blocks during the 1993-94 season ... Okoye currently leads the conference in blocked shots, averaging 2.05 blocks per game.

DOUBLE TIME: Senior Mark Sanchez recorded his sixth double-double of both the season as he tallied 11 points and 11 rebounds at Houston Baptist ... This also marked his second career back-to-back game in which he recorded a double-double as he scored 18 points and 14 boards earlier in the week at Idaho ... The game against the Huskies marked the 14th game in which the senior has scored in double-digits this season, the 15th of his career ... On the season, Sanchez is averaging 12.8 points and 7.4 rebounds per game.
