SAN FRANCISCO - Senior center Kurt Cunningham earned his first selection on the First-Team Academic All-District 8 team and is on the ballot to be selected as an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American.

Cunningham, from Sharpsville, Ind., graduated in the spring of 2009 with a cumulative 3.42 grade point average with a degree in marketing. After graduating from Boise State, he began working on his master's degree in athletic administration and currently holds a 3.73 GPA after his first semester.

The senior joins an elite group of student-athletes as he was just one of four honorees from the Western Athletic Conference to earn the accolade. Other nominees from the WAC include Nevada's Luke Babbitt, Fresno State's Nedeljko Golubovic and Utah State's Tyler Newbold. Cunningham is just the second Boise State men's basketball player to ever be honored, with the first being Matt Nelson in 2008.

While this may be Cunningham's first ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honor, he has earned Academic All-WAC honors the last two seasons.

District 8 includes all of the Pac-10, Big West and West Coast Conference schools, most WAC schools (Louisiana Tech and New Mexico State are each in different districts), UNLV and San Diego State from the MWC and the western Big Sky Conference schools (Sacramento State, Portland State, Eastern Washington and Idaho State). The teams were selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) members.
