► ABOUT BATES - Emma Bates has won four of her five races this season, including the 2013 Mountain West Cross Country title and the 2013 NCAA West Region Championship title. She has clocked a best of 19:11 over a 6-kilometer course, doing so at the West Regionals.

She becomes the first Bronco woman to qualify for the NCAA National Championships since 1999 when Abby Peters competed in the NCAA 5-kilometer race. Bates will become the first Bronco woman to compete at a national meet in the 6-kilometer distance.

Bates becomes only the fifth woman to race at the national meet for Boise State after earning the school's first NCAA West Regional individual title, Nov. 15. Her finish earned her the 2013 USTFCCCA Women's West Region Athlete of the Year and a 2013 USTFCCCA All-Region honor, both fists in her career.

The 2013 Mountain West Athlete of the Year has also earned wins at the 2013 Pre-National Invitational and the Utah Open. After winning three major meets this season and placing second in one (Bill Dellinger Invite), Bates is expected to place amongst the nation's best at the NCAA Championships Saturday.

► ABOUT HOWARD - Jeff Howard earned his first-career trip to the NCAA National Championships after placing seventh at the NCAA West Regional Championships. The meet was the first time he led the Broncos this season. Howard clocked a personal-best of 29:54 over the 10-kilometer course.

With the seventh-place finish, Howard earned his second career USTFCCCA All-Region honor, adding to his 2010 award he earned after placing 17th.

► ALL-AMERICA REQUIREMENTS - The top-40 finishers in the men's and women's NCAA Division I Cross Country Championship races will be awarded USTFCCCA All-America honor, regardless of citizenship. Those earning All-America honors will be given a medal at the national championships.

BRONCOS' NATIONAL MEET HISTORY - Bates becomes the fifth woman in Bronco history to attend the NCAA National Cross Country championships, while Howard becomes the 19th male. The five Bronco women have earned six qualifying spots with Niamh Beime as the only multiple-year qualifier (1995, 1996). On the men's side, the 19 men have qualified 25 times with five men qualifying multiple years. Jose Uribe is the only three-year qualifier for the men and also holds the best finish by a Bronco male, 12th at the 1996 championships. Campbell holds the top female finish at 19th in 1998. Uribe (1996), Forest Braden (2004) and Josh Danielson (1996) are the only Bronco men to earn All-America status, while Campbell (1998) is the only female to do so.

Only three teams have earned qualifying spots in Bronco history: the men's 1973, 1976 and 1996 teams.
