Braden Qualifies for Cross Country National Championships

PORTLAND, Ore. Senior All-American Forest Braden led the Broncos at the NCAA West Region Championships, Saturday, finishing in sixth place individually and qualifying for the national championships.


Braden, who ran the 10,000-meter course at Blue Lake Park in 30-minutes, 24.43-seconds, finished 18.55 seconds behind race winner Neftalem Araia of Stanford. The finish was the second best for a Bronco since joining the Western Athletic Conference in 2001. Braden finished fifth at the regional championships in 2004.


Braden advances to the national championships as one of the top four individual placers not on an advancing team. The NCAA National Cross Country Championships will be held, Nov. 20, at Terre Haute, Ind.


Fellow senior Ty Axtman recorded the best finish of his career at the Regional Championships, finishing 30th with a time of 31:11.78.


The duo led the Bronco men to a 14th place finish in the field of 25 with 389 points. The effort marked the best Bronco team finish at the event since 2003, when the Bronco men finished 12th.


Also racing for the Bronco men were junior Wijnand Rijkenberg (108th), junior Cody Eaton (111th), freshman Reed Huskey (138th), and senior Brandon Christoffersen (139th).


Competing as individuals for the Bronco women were sophomores Breanna Sande and Kendra Hernandez and junior Chaly Jones. Sande posted the best mark, finishing 44th with a 6,000m time of 22:33.94. Hernandez finished 75th and Jones finished 112th.
