Cross Country Prepares for WAC Championships

What’s Happening - The Boise State University men’s and women’s cross country teams will compete in the Western Athletic Conference Championships, Saturday, Oct. 27, at Logan, Utah.

The WAC Championships are hosted by Utah State University at the Historic American West Heritage Center in Logan, Utah.

The Teams - The nine members of the Western Athletic Conference will each be represented in the women’s division while seven schools will send teams to compete for the men’s championship. The women’s field will feature Boise State, Fresno State, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico State, Louisiana Tech, Hawaii, San Jose State, and Utah State. The men’s field will feature the same teams with the exception of Hawaii and Nevada who do not have a men’s cross country team.

The Broncos - The Boise State men’s and women’s cross country teams have each compiled an impressive resume as they head into the Western Athletic Conference Championships.

The women’s team has been ranked in the Western Region throughout the season. It received its highest ranking Oct. 1, as it reached 12th place. In the 2007 Pre-Championship Women’s Cross Country Coaches Poll the Boise State women’s was picked to finish fourth.

The women’s team has won two team titles in five races this season. They opened the season by capturing the team title at the Northwest Nazarene Hampton Inn and Suites Classic with 24 points and then took the title at the Bob Firman Invite with 50 points. In two other races, the West Coast Preview and the Charles Bowles Invitational, the women’s cross country team has earned second place finishes.

“This team is in a position for the championship,” said head coach Mike Maynard. “Breanna Sande has been great for the team throughout the year. It will all come down to who wants it the most that day.”

The Boise State men’s cross country team finished tied for third place with Idaho in the 2007 coaches poll as both teams received 23 points in the poll.

The men earned a first place finish in the opening race of the season, the Northwest Nazarene Hampton Inn and Suites Classic, with 29 points as five Bronco runners finished in the top 13. The team also has two second place finishes, at the West Coast Preview and the Bob Firman Classic.

“The men’s team is within striking distance of the WAC Championship,” said head coach Mike Maynard. “Cody Eaton gives us a great front-runner while Kevin Higgs and Sawyer Bosch have found their roles, we now need strong performances from our No. 4 and 5 runners.”
