Broncos Geared Up for 2012 Mountain West Championships

WHAT'S HAPPENING - The Boise State cross country teams will compete in their second Mountain West Cross Country Championship this Friday (Oct. 26). The 2012 MW Championships are hosted by UNLV and will be held at the Silver Bowl Park in Las Vegas.

MEET SPECIFICS - The 2012 MW Cross Country Championships will be held at Silver Bowl Park in Las Vegas on Fri., Oct. 26. The meet includes a women's 6-kilometer race at 11:00 a.m. (MT), as well as a men's 8-kilometer race at 11:40 p.m. (MT).

CHAMPIONSHIP CENTRAL - The Mountain West has a championship central website at: The championship central includes course maps, bib numbers, race information, race results, photos and video coverage of the meet.

RACING BRONCOS - Competing for the Bronco women this Friday are: Sarah Bisterfeldt, Kate Jette, Lauren Lucas, Erin McLaughlin, Rici Morrill, Tessa Murray, Taryn Treadway and Marisa VanderMalle. Racing for the Bronco men are: Aaron Back, David Elliott, Jeff Howard, Drew O'donoghue-McDonald, Dakota Parker Allan Schroeder, Barak Watson and Zach Wiles.

PRESEASON RANKINGS - The Boise State women's and men's cross country teams were selected as the No. 2 and No. 3 picks, respectively, in the 2012 MW Preseason Cross Country Coaches' Polls released Monday (Aug. 27).

The Bronco women, who finished third at the 2011 MW Championships, earned 54-points and one first-place vote in this year's poll, sitting just behind New Mexico (63-points, seven first-place votes) and ahead of Colorado State (48-points, one first-place vote).

Boise State's men, who placed fourth at the 2011 MW Championships, collected 17-points and one first-place vote in a tight top-three led by New Mexico (24-points, four first-place votes). Air Force came in second with 21-points and one first-place vote.

WEEKLY RANKINGS - In the 2012 USTFCCCA weekly rankings, five MW men's team sit in the most recent regional rankings release Oct. 15, while adding six women's teams to the rankings. The majority of the MW is in the Mountain Region, with New Mexico's men leading the conference with a No. 3 spot. Air Force sits at No. 5 in the Mountain Region rankings, while Wyoming is No. 7 and Colorado State at No. 9. Boise State's men compete within the West Region and sit at No. 9. For the women, New Mexico sits at No. 2 in the Mountain Region, while Air Force (#7), Colorado State (#8), Wyoming (#13) and Nevada (#14) follow. The Bronco women sit at No. 9 in the West Region.

In the Oct. 16 national rankings, New Mexico was the only MW team to sit amongst the nation's top-30 teams in both the men's and women's rankings. The men sit at No. 12, while the women at No. 17.

The next set of regional and national rankings will be released Oct. 29 and 30, respectively.

LAST CHAMPIONSHIP - As mentioned, the Bronco women placed third at the 2011 championships, while the men placed fourth in the team standings. The women placed three, Marisa VanderMalle, Emma Bates and Tessa Murray, on the All-MW Second Team, while the men landed Drew O'dongohue-McDonald and Vince Hamilton on the second team. Hamilton also snagged the MW Men's Freshman of the Year title after finishing as the highest placing freshman in the race. New Mexico swept the men's and women's team titles, as well as men's and women's individual titles.

EARNING HONORS- Three Broncos have earned MW honors this season, beginning with Jeff Howard, who was named MW Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week on Sept. 11. Zach Wiles collected the same honor on Oct. 9 and Barak Watson was named Co-Athlete of the Week on Oct. 16.
