Broncos Fare Well at Willamette's Charles Bowles Invitational

SALEM, Ore. - The Boise State cross country team made a solid showing in their first meet away from the Treasure Valley on Saturday, placing second and seventh at the Willamette Charles Bowles Invitational.

The Bronco men scored 52 points en route the runner-up team title, including a solid third and fourth place finish from junior Sawyer Bosch and freshman Jeff Howard. Chico State won the 19-team competition with 45 points.

The Boise State women snagged a seventh-place finish with a total of 183 points, including a sixth place finish by freshman Shannon Porter. Chico State swept the team titles with the women scoring 43 points.

Bosch led the Broncos with his third place finish crossing the line at 24 minutes, 13.72 while Howard clocked a time of 24 minutes, 15.86 seconds over the 8-kilometer course. Freshman Kevin Rosaaen garnered a respective seventh-place finish in a time of 24 minutes, 25.02 seconds while junior Scott Foley rounded out the top-10 finishers with a tenth-place finish in a time of 24 minutes, 34.08 seconds. Junior Kevin Higgs rounded out the Broncos' scoring runners, placing 29th in a time of 25 minutes, 6.12 seconds.

For the women, Shannon Porter led the Broncos with a sixth-place finish and a time of 17 minutes, 53.68 seconds on the 5-kilometer course. Sophomore Melody Braden was the second scoring runner for the Broncos, placing 42nd in a time of 18 minutes, 32.92 seconds. Junior Alex Bell finished just behind in 43rd-place, clocking a time of 18 minutes, 33.78 seconds. Junior Carly Gerard was the fourth finisher for Boise State, recording a time of 18 minutes, 35.45 seconds to place 48th. The Broncos' final scoring runner was Shea Hanson, who finished in a time of 18 minutes, 46.51 seconds to place 58th.

Winning the men's race of 198 competitors, Michael Wickman of Chico State broke the tape in a time of 24 minutes, 08.06 seconds.

The women's race winner was Idaho's Teegan Schoch, who won the 203-competitor race in a time of 17 minutes, 26.92 seconds.

Other finishers for the Boise State men include: 30. Brian Pierre and 25:14.64; 85. Zach Wiles, 26:06.18.

The Broncos continue their season on Oct. 17 when they head to Santa Clara, Calif., to participate in the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational.
