Broncos Split to Open Season

BOISE, Idaho – After a three-week postponement of the season opener, the Boise State cross country teams will split to two separate meets to open their 2017 campaign, Sept. 30; the Greater Louisville Classic (Louisville, Ky.) and the Charles Bowles Invitational (Salem, Ore.)

WHERE: The Greater Louisville Classic will allow the Broncos to preview EP “Tom” Sawyer State Park – the site for the 2017 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships (Nov. 18). The squad racing at the Charles Bowles Invitational will race at McCulloch Stadium and Bush’s Pasture Park.

WHEN: Greater Louisville Classic College Men’s Gold Race (8-kilometer)- 7:30 a.m. (MT)

Greater Louisville Classic College Women’s Gold Race (5-kilometer)- 8:15 a.m. (MT)

Charles Bowles Invitational Men’s Cardinal Race (8-kilometer)- 10:30 a.m. (MT)

Charles Bowles Invitational Women’s Cardinal Race (5-kilometer)- 11:20 a.m. (MT)

RESULTS: Results for the Greater Louisville Classic will be posted at the conclusion of each race here. Results for the Charles Bowles Invitational will be posted at the conclusion of each race here. There will be no live stream or live results for either race.

IN THE RANKINGS: Despite being one of two teams ranked by USTFCCCA to have not raced yet, the Broncos remain ranked on both sides. The women enter the weekend ranked No. 13 nationally, while the men check in at No. 26.

THE FIELD:
The men racing at the Greater Louisville Classic will race in a field of 36 teams. The men’s field features eight teams  ranked in the latest USTFCCCA poll (Sept. 26): No. 1 Northern Arizona, No. 7 Wisconsin, No. 12 Furman, No. 19 Illinois, No. 20 Middle Tennessee State, No. 24 Virginia Tech, No. 26 Boise State, Eastern Kentucky (RV, 4).

The 42-team field in the women’s race at the Greater Louisville Classic features six teams  that are ranked in the latest USTFCCCA poll: No. 13 Boise State, No. 18 Wisconsin, No. 25 Vanderbilt, No. 29 Furman, West Virginia (RV, 26), Louisville (RV, 13).

The field of the Charles Bowles Invitational includes 18 teams on the men’s side, and 20 on the women’s side.

FAMILIAR COURSE: The return to Louisville will be the first for the Broncos since both teams competed at the national championships (Nov. 21, 2015). Allie Ostrander took runner-up honors in leading the women to an 11th-place finish – tied for the best team finish in program history on the women’s side. The men raced to a 16th-place in what was the first time Boise State sent both teams to a national championship.

A combined eight (four men, four women) that raced on the 2015 national championship squads will return to Louisville this weekend.

YOUTH FACTOR: Of the 34 Broncos racing this weekend, nine will be racing cross country for the first time in the Blue and Orange.
