Willamette Invitational on the Horizon

What’s Happening - The Boise State University men’s and women’s cross country teams will travel to Salem, Ore., to compete in the 33rd annual Charles Bowles Invitational Cross Country Meet.

 

The race will be host by Willamette University Sept. 29 at McCulloch Stadium and Bush Park. The men’s 8,000-meter race will begin at 10:50 a.m. followed by the women’s 5,000-meter race at 11:35 a.m.

 

The Broncos - In the Bob Firman Invitational, Sept. 22, at Eagle, Idaho, the women’s cross country team won the title with a 30 point effort. The men finished second with 50 points.

 

At the West Coast Preview, Friday, Sept. 14, the Boise State men’s and women’s cross country team each collected second place finishes. Both teams finished behind the University of Portland.

 

In the first race of the season, Sept. 8, at the Northwest Nazarene Hampton Inn and Suites Classic at Nampa, Idaho, Boise State recorded a clean sweep by collecting both team titles along with the men’s and women’s individual titles.

 

The Athletes - Men

 

The men’s team returns only one upperclassman to the team that finished second at the 2006 Western Athletic Conference Championships. Senior and second-team All-WAC selection, Cody Eaton, leads a young squad that features a deep and talented group of runners.

 

Eaton led the men’s team to victory at the Northwest Nazarene Hampton Inn and Suites Classic with 29 points as he recorded a first place finish on the 6,000-meter course with a 3:06.9. At the West Coast Preview he posted a 25:59.0 to finish 12th. In the Bob Firman Invite he finished fourth to lead the team to a second place finish. Eaton was also earned WAC Men’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week for his performance at the NNU Hampton Inn and Suites Classic.

 

Freshman Sawyer Bosch has recorded two top five finishes in three race this season. At the Northwest Nazarene Hampton Inn and Suites Invitational he collected a third place finish with an 18:49.9 on the 6,000-meter course. At the West Coast preview he finished fifth with a 25:34.2 on the 8,000-meter course. At the Bob Firman Invite he finished in 14th place with a 25:55.15.

 

A fellow freshman Kevin Higgs has recorded three top 15 finishes this season. He posted a fifth place with a 19:02.2 at the NNU Hampton Inn and Suite Classic and an eighth place finish with 25:43.1 at the West Coast Preview. He also recorded a 15th place finish at the Bob Firman Invite with a 25:56.34.

 

The Athletes - Women

 

The women’s cross country team returns second-team All-WAC performers in juniors Kendra Hernandez and Breanne Sande. The two juniors combined with seniors Meadow Braden and Chaly Jones will be relied upon to guide the young women’s team through the rigors of the cross country season as the team prepares for the 2007 WAC Championships.

 

Breanna Sande has posted three top five finishes in the opening three races of the season. She won the Hampton Inn and Suites Classic with a 14:13.6 then finished fourth at the West Coast Preview with a 21:59.0. At the Bob Firman Invite she led the team to victory as she finished in second place with an 18:16.60.

 

Sophomore Hilary McClendon earned a fifth place finish at the Bob Firman Invite with an 18:32.38 on the 5,000-meter course to aid the Broncos in capturing the team title.

 

Senior Chaly Jones has collected three top 10 finishes this season. She recorded a fifth place finish at the Hampton Inn and Suites Classic, an eighth place finish at the West Coast Preview and a ninth place finish at the Bob Firman Invite (18:49.74).
