Kevin Higgs, Shannon Porter Capture Titles at the Second Annual Roger Curran Invitational

NAMPA, Idaho -The 2009 Boise State cross country season got underway on Saturday afternoon with a win for the men's team and a second-place finish for the women at the second annual Roger Curran Invitational. The men captured the team title in the 6-kilometer race while the women finished as runner-up over a 4-kilometer course at West Park.

The men finished with a near-perfect team score of 18 points in a field of 71 runners while junior Kevin Higgs (Nampa, Idaho) captured the men's title in a time of 18 minutes, 41.23 seconds. A pair of freshmen helped sweep the top-3 spots for the Broncos with Jeff Howard (Spokane, Wash.) and Kevin Rosaaen (Fircrest, Wash.) placing second and third respectively. Howard clocked a time of 18 minutes, 44.72 seconds while Rosaaen, who led the race for approximately 5-kilometers, finished in a time of 18 minutes, 53.46 seconds.

Junior Sawyer Bosch (Portland, Ore.) snagged a fifth-place finish in a time of 19 minutes, 6.64 seconds while junior Scott Foley (Cheyenne, Wyo.) rounded out the scoring Broncos with a time of 19 minutes, 9.69 seconds.

On the women's side, the Broncos were knocked off by the College of Idaho who scored 46 team points to Boise State's 52 team points. Freshman Shannon Porter (Hockinson, Wash.) won the women's race in a field of 48 runners, leading the majority of the race to break the tape at 14 minutes, 19.20 seconds. Junior Carly Gerard (Boise, Idaho) garnered the second spot amongst the Broncos, placing ninth overall in a time of 15 minutes, 17.31 seconds. Freshman Piper Delany (Medford, Ore.) captured a 13th-place finish as the next Bronco to cross the finish line. Delany finished in a time of 15 minutes, 18.97 seconds despite running nearly 3-kilometers of the race with only one shoe on after losing it in the starting stretch of the race.

Junior Alex Bell (Salinas, Calif.) garnered a 15th-place finish and a time of 15 minutes, 26.12 seconds while sophomore Melody Braden (Bonners Ferry, Idaho) finished in 19th-place with a time of 15 minutes, 49.50 seconds to round out the top-5 runners for Boise State as well as the Broncos who scored.

Also finishing for the Bronco men: 8. Zach Wiles (Jr., 19:14.40); 11. Cameron Lockard (Sr., 19:23.09); 23. Austin Edwards (So., 20:06.55); 25. Cassidy Bigsby (So., 20:16.24); and 34. Quinten Hennekam (So., 20:38.80).

Also finishing for the Bronco women: 21. Katherine Gallagher (So., 16:00.84); 25. Kacie Bitzenburg (So., 16:18.50); 31. Kristi Pace (So., 17:03.96); 33. Chelsea Herren (Fr., 17:18.98); 36. Lacie Anderson (Fr., 17:36.09); 46. Ariel Hopewell (So., 19:43.78); and 47. Jenny Geyer (Fr., 20:07.47).

The Broncos will continue their season in two when they participate in the Bob Firman Invitational at Eagle Island State Park on Saturday, Sept. 26.
