Broncos Sweep MW Weekly Honors

BOISE, Idaho--Boise State's Emma Bates and David Elliott were named Mountain West Women and Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week, announced Tuesday, for competitions Sept. 5-6.

Bates, the nine-time All American, earned the weekly honor after her first-place finish at the Utah Open on Sept. 5. The Elk River, Minn., native finished the four-kilometer course in 14:10.1, more than 13 seconds ahead of runner-up and teammate Marisa Howard.

Bates' win helped the Bronco women earn the meet victory, defeating No.28-ranked Weber State as well as BYU, Utah and Westminster College.

Elliott, a senior from Bellingham, Wash., earned his first collegiate win at the Utah Open. Elliott finished the six-kilometer course in 19:14.5, two-tenths of a second ahead of Weber State's Mike Hardy.

Bates and Elliott's recognition marks the first time Boise State student-athletes have swept Mountain West cross country weekly honors. The accolade is the third MW Cross Country Athlete of the Week honor for Bates, and first for Elliott.

Up next for the Broncos is the Roy Griak Invitational, hosted by the University of Minnesota on Sept. 27.
