Boise State Cross Country Takes Titles At Season Opener
NAMPA, Idaho The Boise State cross country team started off on the right foot as it opened its season at the helm of first year head coach Brad Wick as both the men’s and women’s team took the title at the First Annual Roger Curran Invite held at Westside Park, Saturday.

The women’s 4k was first as Kayleen McDowell led the Broncos with a third place finish with a time of 15:10.50.  Following close behind were teammates Carly Gerard (15:13.34) and Kendra Hernandez (15:15.62) who rounded out the top five finishers in the event.  Karleigh Gempler took eighth with a time of 15:26.46, while Shea Hanson took 13th (15:40.31), Pamila Ward (15:45.52) finished 14th and Melody Braden (15:45.90) placed 15th to round out the scoring for Boise State.

“The women did really well,” said Wick. “They weren’t in an elite group before, and we closed the gaps so we had a nice pack of about six or seven which we didn’t have two weeks ago even. So a lot of, what should be the top girls who were injured this summer, are starting to get some fitness back and throughout the season we’ll just keep getting better and better.”

Leading the way for the men was Brian Pierre with a second place finish in the 6k with a time of 19:07.02. Sophomore Sawyer Bosch took third with a 19:09.21, while Cameron Lockard placed fifth (19:33.72). Next to finish for the Broncos was Cassidy Bigsby clocking a time of 19:52.34, good enough for 11th, while teammate Quinten Hennekam recorded a time of 20:08.78 to place 14th. Also scoring for the Broncos was Scott Foley with a 16th place finish (20:14.56) and Kevin Higgs in 17th (20:15.37).

“I think we had some tired guys over the last couple of weeks and we did just fine this time of the season,” said Wick of the men’s team. “Come the end of the season they’ll be ready to roll and our one-through-five spread will significantly close, even by the next meet.”

The Broncos now prepare for the Portland WCC Invitational in Portland, Ore., scheduled to take place Friday, Sept. 12.
