Broncos Ranked Second in MW
Aug. 31, 2017

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Both the Boise State men’s and women’s cross country teams were selected to finish second in the Mountain West in the preseason coaches’ poll, the league announced, Thursday.

“We’re once again coming off of a good year in the Mountain West,” head coach Corey Ihmels said. “Our goal is to win a championship every year in the Mountain West, and it’s exciting we’re in the mix. Now we get to start the season and see where we end up.”

The men were picked second behind Colorado State, receiving 45 points and three first-place votes. The Rams narrowly edged the Broncos with 46 points and five first-place votes. Boise State was picked second in last year’s poll, but went on to edge Colorado State at the conference championship to win their first ever Mountain West title.

The Bronco men return all nine members of last year’s title squad, including defending individual champion, Yusuke Uchikoshi, first-team All-Mountain West runner Michael Vennard, and second-team All-Mountain West runners Miler Haller and Rhys Park.

In this week’s USTFCCCA poll, the Broncos were also picked No. 24 in the nation.

Air Force (35), New Mexico and Utah State (28), Wyoming (20), San Jose State (12) and Fresno State (9) rounded out the poll on the men’s side.

For the fifth-straight season, the Boise State women were also picked second in the Mountain West preseason poll. The Broncos received one first-place vote and 89 points, trailing only nine-time defending champion New Mexico, with 10 first-place votes and 100 points.

Air Force was selected third (81), Colorado State fourth (71), Utah State fifth (61), Nevada sixth (56), Wyoming (seventh (53), San Jose State eighth (33), Fresno State ninth (25), San Diego State 10th (20) and UNLV 11th (16) to round out the poll on the women’s side.

The women finished third at last year’s conference championship, but return all but one member from last year’s squad. Back for the Broncos Allie Ostrander – the 2015 NCAA cross country runner-up and 2017 outdoor 3,000 meter steeplechase champion, two-time cross country All-American Brenna Peloquin, and 2016 Mountain West Women’s Freshman of the Year, Clare O’Brien.

Boise State was pegged as the No. 19 team in the country on the women’s side by USTFCCCA, Tuesday.

The team will open the season, Sept. 7, at the Oregon XC Preview. The Mountain West Championships will be held, Oct. 27, in Albuquerque, N.M.
