Both XC Teams Open Season Ranked
Aug. 29, 2017

NEW ORLEANS – The rise of Boise State cross country continued Tuesday, as both the men’s and women’s teams will begin the season ranked in the top 25 for only the second time in program history, the USTFCCCA announced in their National Coaches’ Poll.

The Bronco women will begin the season ranked No. 19 with 144 points, while the men were tagged No. 24 with 97 points. This is the second straight season both teams enter the season ranked.

“It’s great to be recognized at the beginning of the year,” head coach Corey Ihmels said. “Obviously the rankings are dictated based on what happened last year and the recruiting coming in, but we obviously need to get out and get the season going. We still need to see if we can live up to the rankings, or hopefully do better.”

The Boise State women failed to qualify as a team for the NCAA Championship last season, but return Allie Ostrander – the 2015 NCAA cross country runner-up and 2017 outdoor 3,000 meter steeplechase champion. The No. 19 ranking is the second-highest preseason ranking in program history.

Also returning for the Broncos will be two-time NCAA cross country All-American Brenna Peloquin and Mountain West Women’s Freshman of the Year, Clare O’Brien.

The team narrowly missed a berth at the NCAA National Championship with their seventh-place finish at the West Regional.

The Bronco men open the season ranked for the fourth time in program history. The team returns all eight-members of last year’s Mountain West Championship squad. The team also punched their ticket to the NCAA National Championship after a seventh-place finish at the West Regional.

Boise State would finish 19th at the national meet.

Leading the Broncos will be defending Mountain West individual champion, Yusuke Uchikoshi, first team All-Mountain West runner Michael Vennard, and All-Mountain West second-teamers Miler Haller and Rhys Park.

Yesterday, the women were ranked No. 5 while the men were ranked No. 6 in the West Region by the USTFCCCA.

Both teams will open the season, Sept. 7, at the Oregon XC Preview.
