Mountain West Release

BOISE, Idaho
– Both the Boise State men’s and women’s cross country teams were picked to finish second in the Mountain West according to the preseason coaches’ poll. The New Mexico men’s and women’s teams were tabbed as the conference favorites. The Lobo women have won seven consecutive Mountain West Conference Championships, while the men have won six straight.

The men’s poll has New Mexico in the lead with 46 points and five first-place votes, but the Broncos are right behind the Lobos with 42 points and one first-place vote. Colorado State finished in third with 41 points and two first-place votes to round out the top three teams.

Air Force (31) and Wyoming (25) make up the fourth and fifth spots, respectively, and Utah State (19), Fresno State (12) and San Jose State (8) round out the last three spots of the conference.

The women’s side saw the Lobos earn the first-place nod by a more convincing margin of 100 points thanks to 10 first-place votes. Boise State – the only other team to receive a first-place vote (1) – came in second with 88 points. Colorado State and Wyoming claim a share of third place with 79 points.

The middle tier features Air Force (58), Nevada (52) and Utah State in fifth, sixth and seventh place, respectively. Fresno State received 36 points to earn eighth place, UNLV drew 25 points for ninth, San Jose State (21) was voted 10th and San Diego State received 18 points to round out the conference in 11th place.

The Bronco women’s team finished second at the MW Cross Country Championships last fall, while the men took fourth. Boise State will be without last year’s men’s and women’s individual champions, senior David Elliott (out of XC eligibility) and recently graduated Emma Bates.
