LOGAN, Utah – The Boise State women’s cross country team started out the season with a convincing win Saturday morning at the Sagebrush Invitational in Logan, Utah at the Steve and Dona Reeder Cross Country Course, scoring 32 points to edge out second-place Utah State (56).

The victory marks the second-straight season that the Bronco women have opened the season by taking first place in the season-opening meet. Last year they won the Dual in Speedway Meadow in San Francisco courtesy of 33 points.

The women were buoyed by four runners in the top 10 on the 5K course. Freshman Aussie Clare O’Brien was the low stick for Boise State, finishing in second place thanks to a 17:39. Sophomore Kyra Lopez was close behind, taking third (17:43).

The other two top-10 finishers were Sarah Hastings (5th – 17:55) and Karlie Swanson (8th – 18:05). Alexis Fuller rounded out the scoring for the Broncos thanks to an 18:24 for 14th.

Jordan Jacob (18th – 18:29) and Amy Pfaff (21st – 18:40) also competed well for the Blue and Orange.

The men took second in the team standings behind first place Southern Utah (26) thanks to 46 points on the 7K course. Michael Vennard led the way with a fourth-place finish, running a 21:10. Chandler Austin (21:19) and Rhys Park (21:25) also crossed the line in the top 10, taking seventh and 10th, respectively.

Yusuke Uchikoshi was 12th (21:31) and Miler Haller was right behind in 13th (21:33). The other two runners in the Broncos’ top seven were Jeff Lautenslager (14th – 21:34) and Andrew Rafla (17th – 21:42).

Both the men and women will compete again on Sept. 24 at the Griak Invitational in Minneapolis, Minn., at the Les Bolstad Course on the campus of the University of Minnesota.
