Mills has coached for over forty years at all levels; elementary/youth, junior high school, varsity high school and now at Boise State. For 34 years he was the head cross country coach at Boise High School, as well as both head and an assistant track coach. In that time the Boise HS cross country teams and runners won 10 State 5A team championships and 10 State 5A individual championships. Three of his runners also won National Junior Olympic championships in cross country.

From 1991 until 2013, Boise HS runners won 37 individual track and field state championships in the distances of 800m to 3,200m as well as two championships in the 4x800 relay. Boise HS runners have held or now hold Idaho all-time state bests in the Girls 800m, Boys 800m, Girls 1,600m, Boys 1,600m, Girls Mile and Girls 3,200m. In 2005 the Girls cross country team was selected to compete in the Nike Team Nationals and in 2011 one individual qualified to the Nike Nationals.

Dave has a master’s degree in elementary curriculum and instruction from Boise State University and holds a USA Track & Field Level 3 Certification in Endurance as well as an Elite Coach with Distinction Academy Diploma from the International Association of Athletics Federations. Dave has been an instructor of USA Track & Field Level 1 and 2 Schools in Endurance for many years. Dave and his wife Claudia live in Boise and have four grown children along with nine grandchildren.
