Bronco Track and Field Opens Season with Strong Marks at Jacksons Open

NAMPA, Idaho - The 2009-10 Boise State track and field season got underway Friday night with the first day of competition of the 2009 Jacksons Open. The meet was held at the Jacksons Indoor Track at the Idaho Center with the first day of competition consisting of the women's pentathlon and first day of the men's heptathlon. The two-day meet continues all day Saturday with the men's heptathlon 60-meter hurdles kicking off the day at 9:00 a.m. All individual events as well as relays will be run throughout Saturday as well.

With only the pentathlon and heptathlon taking place on Friday evening, the Broncos were represented by only a small part of their squad.  No Broncos participated on the women's side, leaving Kurt Felix and Steve Anderson to represent the team on the men's side.

After four events, Felix leads the field of 11 men in the heptathlon with a total score of 3,257-points. He earned wins in the 60-meter dash (7.21 seconds), the long jump (23-feet, 11-inches) and the high jump (6-feet, 8 ¾-inches) as well as placing second in the shot put with a throw of 45-feet, 2 ½-inches.

Anderson holds the sixth-place position with 2,448-points.

On the women's side Jill Bennett of Northwest Nazarene came away with the pentathlon title scoring 2,927-points. Bennett won the high jump and 800-meters while also placing second in the hurdles and long jump in the six-women competition.

The men will complete the heptathlon on Saturday morning beginning with the 60-meter hurdles. They will also participate in the pole vault and 1,600-meter run to complete the seven-event competition.
