June 16, 2018

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Boise State’s Emily Venters took second in the women’s 5,000m at the USATF Junior Outdoor Championships, and will now represent the United States at the 2018 IAAF World Championships (July 19-24) in Tampere, Finland. This will be Venters’ second experience with Team USA after making the Junior Women’s team for the Great Edinburgh XCountry International Challenge earlier this year.

The rising sophomore took second with a time of 16.19:22, besting Iowa State’s Amanda Vestri by 61-hundreths of a second to earn the automatic berth to the World Championship. Venters, Vestri and Iowa State’s Callie Logue established the lead pack 600 meters into the race. The trio would hold strong until Logue separated herself with 800 meters to go.

The second-place finish by Venters is the highest-ever finish by a Bronco at the USATF Junior Outdoor Championships, besting Leif Everson’s third-place finish in the men’s 5,000m Friday night. Venters will now continue an impressive freshman season that saw her take 53rd at the NCAA Cross Country Championships, while also qualifying for the NCAA West Preliminaries in the 5,000m during the outdoor season.
