SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Mattias Jons posted the top throw in the qualifying round of the men’s hammer on Wednesday (June 7) at the NCAA National Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
                Jons, a senior from Sweden and runner-up in the event at last year’s national championships, advanced to the finals with a throw of 227-3 (69.26m). Virginia Tech University’s Spyridon Jullien, the defending national champion, had the second best mark with a throw of 223-8 (68.17m).
                The top 12 finishers from Wednesday’s competition will compete in the finals on Friday (June 9) beginning at Noon (PT) on the Sacramento State campus.
                Boise State freshman Simon Wardhaugh missed qualifying for Friday’s finals in the hammer when he posted the 16th best throw at 203-1 (61.91m). Wardhaugh entered the national meet with a personal best mark of 216-4 (65.93m).
                Bronco senior Jackieann Morain also failed to advance to the next round of her event on Wednesday when she placed sixth in her heat of the 400-meter dash. Morain, who tied the Boise State record in the event earlier this season at 53.45, ran a time of 54.04 in Wednesday’s qualifying round.
                Two more Broncos get into action on Thursday (June 8) when Keron Francis and Scott Viafore compete in the men’s javelin. The qualifying round begins at 1:15 p.m. (PT). The top 12 will advance to Saturday’s (June 10) finals.
                The final Bronco student-athlete participating at this year’s national championships is Eleni Kafourou. The freshman from Greece will compete in the qualifying round of the women’s triple jump at 1:00 p.m. (PT) on Friday.
