Felix, Bates to Represent Broncos at Nationals

BOISE, Idaho - Boise State's Kurt Felix and Emma Bates are set to represent the Broncos this week (June 6-9) at the 2012 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field National Championships held in Des Moines, Iowa. The four-day meet will be hosted at Drake University's Drake Stadium/Jim Duncan Track for the second-straight year.

Felix, a redshirt senior, will compete in the decathlon for the second time in his career at an NCAA outdoor national meet. He competed in the 2010 NCAA decathlon, placing 13 th, and enters this season's competition ranked fourth. He holds a career-best, school record and Grenada national record set this season in the 10-event competition with 7,972-points. Showing to be a tight race for the national title, Felix sits only 95-points behind this year's leader, Isaac Murphy of Texas who has totaled 8,067-points this season.

Felix, the 2012 Mountain West Decathlon Champion will begin his quest for the national title on Wednesday, June 6 at 11 p.m. (MT) with the 100-meter dash. He will continue competition on Thursday, June 7 at 10:30 a.m. (MT) with the decathlon's 110-meter hurdles.

Bates, a redshirt freshman, will compete in her first NCAA national competition ranking 16th in the 5,000-meters with her school record time of 16:16.74. Bates set the school record time at the 2012 NCAA West Preliminary Round where she placed 11th. She also holds the third-fastest 5,000-meter time in school history, as well as the third-fastest 10,000-meter time after only one season of outdoor competition. Washington's Megan Goethals leads the 5,000-meter pack heading into Saturday with a time of 15:46.82.

Bates, the 2012 MW 5,000-meter Champion will race in the national final on Saturday, June 9 at 11:19 a.m. (MT).

► Meet Information - The NCAA National Championship meet competition fields are built with 24 competitors in each event. There are 12 qualifiers from both the NCAA East and NCAA West Preliminary Rounds which were held May 24-26, hosted by the University of Texas in Austin, Texas, and the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Fla. The national meet will consist of a quarterfinal round (prelims), semifinal round and final round in Des Moines, Iowa, although both Broncos compete in final events, forgoing the earlier rounds. Those who finish in the top-8 of their event will earn NCAA All-America First Team honors, while 9-16 are named to the second team and 17-24 are honorable mention.
