Eleven Broncos Set To Compete at West Regional

What’s Happening Eleven members of the Boise State University track and field team will travel to Northridge, Calif., May 30-31, to compete in the NCAA West Regional Championships.

 

The Bronco Men The Boise State men’s track and field team is ranked 25th in Division I with 92.15 points. Eight members of the team will be representing the Broncos in 12 events at the regional championships.  

 

WAC Men’s Field Performer of the Year, Ryan Grinnell moved up the national rankings in both the high jump and the triple jump following the WAC Championships. He ranks second in the nation in the triple jump with a mark of 54-3.75 (16.55m) and ninth in the high jump after clearing 7-2.50 (2.20m). Grinnell also ranks 18th in the long jump with a distance of 25-7.25 (7.80m).

 

Simon Wardhaugh is ranked third in the hammer throw with a mark of 226-6 (69.05m). He moved up the ranking by adding 2-4 (0.71m) to his hammer mark at the WAC Championships, May 16. If Wardhaugh were to place third at nationals, he would earn 26 placement points and 2.18 bonus points for the men’s team.

 

Pontus Thomee is ranked 49th in the javelin with a mark of 214-8 (65.43m) which he earned May 17.

 

Savvas Diakonikolas moved into 10th in the NCAA in the long jump with a distance of 25-10.75 (7.89m). Diakonikolas will also be participating triple jump, where he is ranked 76th nationally with a mark of 50-0 (15.24m).

 

Jarrod Stevens is ranked 11th in the hammer with a toss of 219-0 (66.77m). Last season, he finished 14th at the west regional championships with a mark of 210-0 (64.26m).

 

Zacharias Arnos rose nine places in the national triple jump rankings to No. 18 with a leap of 52-0 (15.85m). Arnos will also compete in the long jump after earning a qualifying mark of 24-5.5 (7.45m), at the WAC Championships, May 16.

 

Nate Putnam ranks 54th in the javelin toss with a mark of 212-1 (64.65m). This is his fourth straight trip to the NCAA West Regional Championships. His best finish came his freshman season when he finished second with a throw of 222-6 (67.82m).

 

Nick Cunningham will represent the men’s track team as he competes in the 200m dash. He is currently ranked 86th in the nation in the event with a time of 21.15.

 

The Bronco Women - The Boise State women’s track and field team will be sending three student-athletes competing in four event to the NCAA West Regional Championships, May 30-31, at Northridge, Calif.

 

Eleni Kafourou is ranked on the NCAA performance list in both the long jump and the triple jump. She is ranked fourth in the nation in the long jump with a mark of 21-5.50 (6.54m) and 14th in the triple jump with a distance of 42-6 (12.95m). At the 2007 NCAA West Regional Championships, Kafourou finished fourth in the triple jump (42-8.25/13.01m) and fifth in the long jump (20-3.50/6.18m).

 

Kayleen McDowell posted a 2:08.88 at the Robinson Invitational, Apr. 26, to earn her NCAA West Regional qualifying standard. Her time currently ranks her 75th on the NCAA performance list.

 

Megan Olivetti registered a Boise State school-record 13.81 in the 100m hurdles, May 16, to earn an NCAA West Regional qualifying standard. Her time ranks her 18th in the west region.
