Thomee Punches Ticket to Eugene for NCAA Championship Final Round

AUSTIN, Texas - Six Boise State track and field team members began their NCAA experience on Thursday (May 27) in the first day of the NCAA West Championship First Round meet held at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas.

Senior Pontus Thomee had an outstanding day in the javelin throw, punching his ticket to the national championship meet after winning the event Thursday afternoon. The Goteborg, Sweden native threw a season-best mark of 236 feet, 5 inches on his third of six throws in the competition, launching him into the lead. Thomee is one of 12 throwers out of the 48-person field to advance to the NCAA Championship Final Round.

Also advancing on Thursday was freshman Rolando Trammel, who earned a qualifying spot from the preliminary round of the 400-meter hurdles to the quarterfinal round which will be held on Friday (May 28). The Albuquerque, N.M., native ran a career-best time of 51.93 seconds in the intermediate hurdles to earn the 23rd spot and becoming one of 24 to advance to tomorrow's quarterfinal round at 6 pm (MT).

Senior Zacharias Arnos just missed a qualifying spot in the long jump, tying for 12th with his mark but losing the tie-break to finish 13th and miss the top-12 that advances. The Nicosia, Cyprus native jumped a mark of 24 feet, 6.50 inches. Arnos was ranked No. 12 heading into the event, but will have even better odds of advancing on Saturday in the triple jump where he ranks second.

Sophomore Eetu Viitala also participated in Thursday's long jump competition where he placed 36th out of the 48 competitors with his jump of 22 feet, 9 inches. Junior Kurt Felix joined Thomee in the javelin throw, placing 17th with a toss of 209 feet, 2 inches. Neither Viitala nor Felix advance to the NCAA Final Round with their marks, however Felix will have another chance to advance in the high jump on Friday (3 pm MT). Felix has already qualified for the championships in the decathlon, holding the No. 17 spot in the rankings.

Junior Sasa Kampic was the final Bronco to compete on Thursday, participating in the javelin. Unfortunately, Kampic was unable to record a mark in the event, ending her trip to the NCAA Preliminary Round quickly.

Friday's schedule will include nine Broncos in competition, including Trammel in the quarterfinal round of the 400-meter hurdles (6 pm MT). Monisha Davis, Megan Olivetti and Marjani Maldonado will compete in the preliminary round of the 100-meter hurdles (4 pm) while Sawyer Bosch will be the final Bronco on the track, racing in the 3000-meter steeplechase quarterfinals (7:30 pm).
