Bates Punches Ticket to Nationals

AUSTIN, Texas - Six Boise State track and field athletes competed Saturday in the third and final day of the 2012 NCAA Track and Field West Preliminary Round. Emma Bates was the highlight of the day, earning a qualifying spot in the 5000-meters to the NCAA national meet in June.

Bates smashed the school record in the 5000-meters en route to her first qualifying spot to an NCAA national meet. She clocked a time 16:16.74 to break the school record by over four-seconds after racing to a sixth-place finish in her heat and making the top-12 qualifying list with an 11 th-place overall finish.

Rolando Trammel was the only other Bronco to compete on the track on Saturday, racing in the quarterfinals of the 110-meter hurdles. He clocked a career-best time of 13.98-seconds to place eighth in his heat and 19 th overall. His time sits just .01-seconds outside the Boise State all-time top-three marks in the event.

In the field events Chase Sexton led the Broncos with his 26 th-place finish in the discus. Sexton threw to an 11th-place finish in his flight with a mark of 170'-4".

Mele Vaisima and Alyssa Osai competed in the hammer throw on Saturday, placing 27 th and 29th, respectively. Vaisima threw 189'-6" to place 15th in her flight while Osai threw 188'-2" to place 10th in her flight.

Debra Johnson was the final Bronco to compete on Saturday, placing 41 st in the triple jump. Johnson recorded a mark of 39'-3.75" to place 10th in her flight.

The Broncos send Bates and teammate Kurt Felix to the 2012 NCAA National Championships at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. The meet will be held June 6-9 at Drake Stadium.
