Eight Compete in NCAA First Round Day One

AUSTIN, Texas - Eight Boise State track and field athletes competed on day one of the 2012 NCAA West Preliminary Round, Thursday (May 24), at the University of Texas' Mike A. Myers Stadium.

Rolando Trammel was the only Bronco to earn an advancing spot on the day, placing third in the second heat of the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 51.82-seconds, a near career-best. He placed 15 th overall, earning a top-24 qualifying spot from the preliminary round to the quarterfinals on Friday at 7:30 p.m. (CT).

Eetu Viitala, a 2011 NCAA national qualifier in the long jump, just missed a trip to nationals this season after placing 16 th in the long jump. Viitala won the first flight with a mark of 24'-9.75", his second-best mark this season, just missing the top-12 qualifying spots.

Drew O'donoghue-McDonald raced to a 29 th-place finish in the 1500-meters, clocking a time of 3:54.93. His efforts landed him an eighth-place finish in his heat, but finished just short of the top-24 that advance to the quarterfinals on Saturday.

Will Lohman threw 54'-10.75" in the shot put to place sixth in his flight and 36 th overall in his first NCAA meet appearance. The top-12 marks advance to the NCAA national meet.

Scott Foley wrapped up the men's efforts on Thursday, racing in the 10000-meters late in the evening. Foley ended his career with a solid time of 32:27.71 to place 42 nd overall.

For the women Racquel Jones earned the top finish of the day, placing 22 nd in the long jump. She earned a third-place finish in her flight with a season-best mark of 19'-8.25", completing her season.

Sasa Kampic placed 14 th in her flight and 44th overall in the javelin throw notching a mark of129'-2". She completes her career at Boise State with the NCAA West Preliminary Round.

Emma Bates was the final Bronco to compete on Thursday, running the 10000-meters late into the evening. A video review was underway near midnight, but results revealed Bates' ran to a 15th-place finish in 34:48.55, a near personal-best.

Broncos Rolando Trammel (400 hurdles, 110 hurdles), Justin Malnes (110 hurdles), Trevor Kraychir (hammer), Will Lohman (hammer), Allan Schroeder (steeplechase) and Sawyer Bosch (steeplechase) will compete throughout the day on Friday.
