14 Broncos Qualify for West Preliminary Championships
May 23, 2014
BOISE, Idaho - 14 Broncos made the cut to the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field West Preliminary Championships at Arkansas in Fayetteville, Ark., May 29-31. Eight men and six women will compete at John McDonnell Field in hopes of qualifying for the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., June 11-14.
The East Preliminary Championships will be held at North Florida in Jacksonville, Fla. Athletes who earn top-12 times/marks in their respective events at the West and East Preliminary Championships will punch a ticket to the NCAA Championships.
Each Bronco will be a part of a 48-person field in their respective events. According to the current West Preliminary Championships rankings, Boise State has seven athletes who possess top-12 rankings. Boise State sent four athletes to the NCAA Championships last year.
Redshirt junior Emma Bates leads the Broncos with two top-12 West Championships rankings in the 5,000m (No. 4) and the 10,000m (No. 1). Bates will be making her third-consecutive trip to the West Championships and will be looking to earn her third-consecutive berth in the NCAA Championships. Bates was an NCAA First Team All-American in the 5,000m and the 10,000m last year.
Bates is joined by Marisa Howard and Tessa Murray on the women’s side in long distance events. Howard is ranked 4th in the 3,000m steeplechase with a school record time of 10:00.79. She has improved on her ranking last year coming into the West Championships (No. 25) and is looking to make her first trip to the NCAA Championships. Murray, a senior from Mount Vernon, Wash., is 37th in the 5,000m and will make her second-consecutive trip to the West Championships.
The Broncos will rely heavily on Hayli Bozarth and her previous West Championships' experience to lead field event competitors. She is ranked 5th in the hammer throw and 18th in the shot put; both of which she has set school records in this year. Jasmyn Jewett and Jordan Ward will make their debut in the West Championships next week when they compete in the triple jump and the high jump, respectively. Jewett is ranked 24th in the triple jump and Ward is ranked 30th in the high jump.
The Boise State men are led by the 3,000m steeplechase tandem of Zach Wiles and Allan Schroeder. Wiles is ranked 5th (8:45.95) and Schroeder is ranked 7th (8:47.56). Next week’s trip to the West Championships will be Wiles’ third consecutive and Schroeder’s second.
Jeff Howard, a redshirt senior from Spokane, Wash., will make his first-career appearance in the West Championships when he competes in the 10,000m as the 40th-ranked competitor. David Elliott is ranked 29th in the 5,000m and will look to improve on his 28th-place finish in last year’s West Championships.
Fernando Martinez and Rex Stanley will compete in the 400m hurdles as the 8th-ranked and 48th-ranked competitors, respectively. The two sophomores are coming off career performances at the MW Championships where Martinez won the title and Stanley ran his career-best time by almost two seconds (52.27). Stanley’s time at the MW Championships earned him the last qualifying spot in the 400m hurdles.
Matt Post – the back-to-back MW Champion in the hammer throw – enters the weekend at No. 10. Post placed 10th at the West Championships last year and placed 18th at the NCAA Championships two weeks later. Austin Hamilton will compete in javelin as the 19th-ranked competitor. Hamilton is coming off a second-place finish at the MW Championships last weekend in Laramie.
